Champix is a p medication that is prescribed to smokers 18 and older as an aid to stop smoking and overcome their nicotine addiction. When used with counseling and changes in behavior, Champix increases the ability to quit by reducing the desire to smoke.

The active ingredient in Champix is varenicline a drug that works by blocking the pleasure sensory part of the brain reducing nicotine cravings.
Champix is manufactured by Pfizer, Germany and is available in maintenance and starter packs.

Warnings and Precautions

When using Champix it is important that you follow all of your doctor's instruction. Read the enclosed patient medication leaflet for safety information.
Champix should not be used if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. You should not use other aids to stop smoking with Champix.

Champix should not be used if you have heart disease, kidney disease, depression, mental illness, or a circulatory disorder without your doctor's approval. Tell your doctor if you take any medications for asthma, diabetes, or if you take blood thinners.

You should use caution when driving, operating machinery, or participating in any activity that requires being alert until you know how Champix affects you.
Stop using Champix and tell your doctor immediately if you experience hyperactivity, confusion, panic attacks, anxiety, hallucinations, changes in mood or behavior, aggression, restlessness, depression, or thoughts of suicide.

If you miss a dose of Champix take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case skip the missed dose and take the next one as scheduled. Never take a second dose to make up for a missed one.

Get immediate medical attention if you accidentally take an overdose of Champix.

Drug Interactions

As with most medications, there is a chance of experiencing a drug interaction when taking varenicline. Discuss the medications you are taking with your doctor to avoid a drug interaction; this includes prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. Never start a new medication without approval from your doctor.

Do not take Champix with any other medication that contains varenicline or any other medications intended for smoking cessation.
The following types of medications may interact with varenicline:

  • Blood thinners
  • Asthma medications
  • Insulin
  • Acid reducers

How to use

Follow your doctor's instructions for using Champix
Champix should always be taken with a full glass of water with food.

Treatment will start with a low dose of Champix. The dose will slowly be increased for the first seven days. Treatment with Champix is usually takes 3 months (12 weeks).
Treatment and the prescribed dosage will be determined by factors based on your circumstances. The dosage schedule will be low at the beginning of treatment increasing gradually during treatment. Follow the dosage as prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects that may require medical attention include:
