Details about Finacea Gel

Finacea Gel contains an organic compound found in barley, rye and wheat called azelaic acid. Finacea Gel is prescribed to treat acne and rosacea. It works by killing the responsible bacteria on the skin resulting in the renewal of the appearance of the skin. It may take up to four weeks to see improved appearance of the skin when using Finacea Gel.

Finacea Gel may be prescribed for other medical conditions not mentioned here.

Warnings and Precautions

When using any prescription medication it is important to follow your doctor's instructions for safe use. Before using Finacea Gel discuss your medical history and the medications you are taking with your doctor.

Do not use Finacea Gel if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
Skin that has been treated with Finacea Gel should not be covered to avoid side effects caused by the absorption of too much azelaic acid.

Do not use other medications for the treatment of acne or rosacea with Finacea Gel. In addition, do not use skin products that contain alcohol, spices, lime or astringent products. Avoid using abrasive cleansers as well.

Certain foods may also cause a reaction. This includes alcohol and spicy foods.
If improvement is not seen after 12 weeks of treatment, contact your doctor for further instructions.

If you forget to apply Finacea Gel it should be applied as soon as you remember or if it is almost time for the next application wait until that time.
Applying too much Finacea Gel could result in skin damage including changes in skin pigmentation, severe burning, hives, itching or stinging. Get medical attention as soon as possible if there is a reaction to an overdose.

Women, who are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breast feeding should not use Finacea Gel without discussing possible risks with their doctor Finacea Gel should not be used with other medications to treat acne or rosacea or on skin that is irritated, chapped, wind or sun burned, dry, or bruised.

Finacea Gel should be stored out of the reach of children and pets.

Drug Interactions

Discuss with your doctor if there are any possible drug interactions with azelaic acid. Do not stop or start a medication, or change the dosage without your doctor's approval.
Finacea Gel should not be used with any other medication used to treat acne or rosacea.

How to use

Finacea Gel should only be used as instructed by your doctor.  Do not change the dosage or use for longer than is prescribed. Generally, Finacea Gel is applied twice a day; once in the morning and once in the evening.

When applying the gel be sure to do the following:

  • Wash and dry hands thoroughly
  • Wash affected area and gently pat dry. Do not rub while drying the skin this could cause irritation.
  • Apply prescribed amount of gel to affected area.
  • Do not cover affected area.

Contact your doctor if you experience burning, excessive dryness, or irritation. The dosage might need to be changed to once a day.

Possible Side Effects

Patients may experience side effects while using azelaic acid. If you have any of the following reactions while being treated with Finacea Gel stop treatment and contact your doctor as soon as possible.

  • Burning
  • Change in skin pigmentation
  • Chapping
  • Dryness
  • Irritation
  • Itching
  • Pealing
  • Redness
  • Tingling

Get immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hives
  • Swelling of face, mouth, tongue or throat
