Details about Lamitor

Lamitor is a medication prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy. Lamitor contains the active ingredient lamotrigene, an anticonvulsant drug. Lamitor may be prescribed by itself or in combination with other medications to prevent seizures in adults. Lamitor may be prescribed for children over 2 years of age. It should be prescribed in combination with another anticonvulsant in children and teenagers younger than 16 years of age. An extended release formula is available for children over 13 years of age and adults.

Lamitor may also be prescribed to adults with bipolar disorder or manic depression. It may also be prescribed for other conditions not listed here.

Warnings and Precautions

Before taking Lamitor you should discuss your health history and the medications your currently take with your doctor. It is important to read the patient information leaflet enclosed with the medication.
Do not take Lamitor if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients or if you are allergic to any other anticonvulsant medication.

Lamitor should not be taken if you had any of these medical conditions: depression, liver disease, or kidney disease.
Do not take Lamitor if you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant without talking to your doctor about the risks. Lamitor may cause birth defects. Women who take birth control pills should tell their doctor, oral contraceptives may reduce the effectiveness of Lamitor. Your doctor may adjust your dosage of Lamitor.

Patients may experience blurred vision while taking Lamitor. It may also impact reflex actions. Until you know how Lamitor affects you avoid driving, operating machinery and participating in activities requiring alertness.

If you miss a dose of Lamitor take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, wait and take the next dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed one.
In case of an accidental overdose, get immediate emergency medical attention. Signs of an overdose include: loss of coordination, blurred vision, seizures, dizziness, and fainting.

Lamitor should be stored in a cool dry location out of the reach of children and pets.

Drug Interactions

There are known medications that may interact with Lamitor. Do not start taking a new medication without telling your doctor that you take Lamitor.
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following medications:

  • Carbamazepine
  • Divalproex
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Oxcarbazepine
  • Phenobarbital
  • Valproic acid

How to use

It is important to follow your doctor's instruction for taking Lamitor. Your dosage will be determined by factors such as age, allergies, and the severity of your condition. Do not stop taking or change the dosage of your medication without the approval of your doctor.

If you take Lamitor in tablet form take with water. Tablets should not be broken, crushed, or chewed.
Oral dissolving tablets should be placed on the tongue and allow to dissolve swallowing several times as it dissolves. You may drink water to help your swallow as it dissolves.

Chewable tablets may be chewed or swallowed whole with a full glass of water.

Possible Side Effects

Lamitor is subject to possible side effects some of which may be life threatening.
Common side effects may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Double vision
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Tremors
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting

If any of the common side effects persist or become worse get medical attention as soon as possible.
Side effects that are more serious and require immediate medical attention include:

  • Changes in behavior
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hives
  • Severe skin rash
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Swelling of face, mouth, throat, or tongue
