Details about Levipil

Levipil is used for the treatment of partial onset seizures it contains the active ingredient levetiracetam which is an anticonvulsant drug. Levipil is prescribed for use by children one month and older and adults. In addition to partial onset seizures, Levipil may also be prescribed for myoclonic seizures in children over 12 years of age and adults and for tonic-clonic seizures in children older than 6 years and for adults.

Doctors may prescribe Levipil for medical conditions not mentioned here.

Warnings and Precautions

Before taking Levipil or any prescription medication you should discuss your medical history and tell your doctor what medications you are currently taking. Follow your doctor's instruction and prescribed dosage when taking Levipil.

Do not take Levipil if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Tell your doctor if you have ever had an adverse reaction to any anticonvulsant drugs.
It is advisable to wear or carry information indicating you take anticonvulsant medication.

You should not take Levipil if you have high blood pressure or kidney disease without discussing its safety with your doctor.
It is not known if Levipil could cause harm to an unborn baby, therefore, you must tell your doctor if are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not take Levipil if you are breastfeeding, it is known to pass through breast milk to the nursing baby.

Levipil may cause dizziness and effect reflexes. Do not drive, operate machinery, or participate in activities that require mental alertness until you know how Levipil affects you.
Patients who take Levipil should not drink alcohol; doing so could increase the chance of experiencing side effects.

If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose, you should then wait and take the dose at that time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed one.
In case of an accidental overdose get immediate emergency medical attention. Sign of an overdose are agitations, aggressive behavior, extreme drowsiness, fainting, weakness, and difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.

Levipil should be stored in a cool dry location out of the reach of children and pets.

Drug Interactions

There are known drugs that will interact with Levipil. Tell your doctor if you take any of the following types of medications:

  • Antihistamines
  • Medications for anxiety
  • Medications for insomnia
  • Methadone
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Narcotic pain medications

This is not a complete list of medications that could have a reaction if taken with Levipil. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a complete list.

How to use

Follow your doctor's instruction for taking Levipil. Read the patient information leaflet that is enclosed with the medication. Do not stop taking or change the dosage amount without the approval of your doctor.

Levipil is generally taken two times a day with a full glass of water. It may be taken with or without food. The tablets are intended to be swallowed whole and should not be broken, chewed, or crushed; doing so may cause the medication to be released into the bloodstream too quickly.

Your doctor may prescribe additional medications to control seizures and may require tests to be sure Levipil is not affecting the function of the kidneys.

Possible Side Effects

As with most medications there are potential side effects associated with Levipil.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Aggressive behavior
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Extreme irritability
  • Extreme mood swings or changes in behavior
  • Hallucinations
  • Hostility
  • Hyperactivity
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle weakness
  • Thoughts of suicide

Get immediate emergency medical attention if you have any symptoms of an overdose or allergic reaction which include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hives
  • Itching or swelling of face, lips, or nose,
  • Rash
  • Swelling of face, throat, or tongue
