About

Rosuvastatin is a type of drug called statins or HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. Statins are used to reduce the amount of "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Rosuvastatin helps to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke. It also helps to reduce the chance coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and heart related complications in people with diabetes.

When used in conjunction with a low fat diet, exercise, and weight control, Rosuvas lowers cholesterol and slows down the build-up of plaque in the arteries.

Details

Rosuvas contains the active ingredient rosuvastatin, which blocks the activity of the enzyme known as HMG CoA reductase. Rosuvas helps to remove LDL or bad cholesterol from the blood and lowers the triglyceride levels in the blood; it also raises the level of the high density lipoprotein or HDL, the good cholesterol in the blood.

Rosuvastatin is sold under a variety of names. Rosuvas is manufactured by Cadila, India. It is available in 10 mg tablets sold in packs of 30, 60, and 90 tablets. The US name brand is Crestor.

Warnings and Precautions

While taking Rosuvas it is important that you follow all of your doctor's instruction. Discuss with your doctor what medications you are taking to avoid a drug interaction; this includes prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Never start a new medication without approval from your doctor. Do not exceed the dosage prescribed and take the medication for the entire time prescribed by your doctor. Continue to take Rosuvas as prescribed even if you are feeling well, high cholesterol usually has no warning signs or symptoms.

Rosuvas should not be taken if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.

Do not take Rosuvas if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Rosuvastatin is a FDA pregnancy category X drug. This means Rosuvas can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects. Use an effective form of birth control while taking Rosuvas.

Rosuvastatin may pass through breast milk to a nursing baby. Do not take Rosuvas if you are a breast feeding
Before taking Rosuvas, tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, thyroid disorder, drink more than two alcoholic beverages a day, if you are age 65 or older, or if you are of Asian descent.

Studies indicate that people of Asian descent may have a lower tolerance to Rosuvastatin causing their bodies to absorb a larger amount of Rosuvastatin. People of Asian descent may need to take a lower dosage.
Although rare, Rosuvas may cause the deterioration of skeletal muscle tissue, which can result kidney failure. Notify your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Dark urine
  • Fever
  • Muscle tenderness
  • Unexplained muscle pain
  • Unusual or extreme fatigue
  • Weakness

This conditions is more likely if you are older, have kidney disease or an underactive thyroid.
Your doctor may require you have routine blood tests while taking Rosuvas.

Your doctor may tell you to stop taking Rosuvas if you experience:

  • Dehydration
  • High or low potassium levels in the blood
  • Low blood pressure
  • Require surgery
  • Uncontrolled seizures

It is important to follow a diet that is low in fat and cholesterol. The effectiveness of rosuvastatin will be decreased if a proper diet is not followed.
Do not use a drug that is past its expiration date.

Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages, they can raise triglyceride levels and increase the chance of liver damage.
Do not use antacids without your doctor's approval; certain antacids can affect how Rosuvas is absorbed.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember or if it is close to the next scheduled dose, wait until that dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed one.
In case of an accidental overdose get immediate emergency medical attention.
Rosuvas should be stored at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

How to use

Take Rosuvas as prescribed by your doctor. You should not stop taking it or change the dosage without your doctor's approval. Take for the entire time prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor will determine the correct dosage of Rosuvas based on factors such as age, weight, and health condition.
Rosuvas is usually taken once a day. Take with a full glass of water with or without food. Rosuvas should be taken at the same time each day.

Possible Side Effects

Some users may experience side effects when rosuvastatin is taken. It is important that you are aware of possible side effects and what to do if you experience any of them. Not all users will experience a side effect.
Get emergency medical attention if you have any symptoms of an allergic reaction to Rosuvas. Signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • Swelling in the face, lips, throat, or tongue

Symptoms of common side effects include:

  • Headache

  • Stomach upset
