About

Urimax contains the active ingredient tamsulosin for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or benign enlargement of the prostate. Tamsulosin eases urination by relaxing the muscles of the bladder and prostate.

Urimax is manufactured by Cipla, India. It is available in capsules with strength of 0.4 mg tamsulosin. Urimax is sold in packages of 30, 60, and 90 capsule packs. Tamsulosin is sold under other brand names; the US brand name is Flomax.

Details

Urimax is a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or benign enlargement of the prostate. As the name implies, an enlarged prostate is an enlargement of the prostate gland. The enlarged gland compresses the urethral canal causing partial or complete blockage of the urethra. Blockage will limit or stop the flow of urine.

The active ingredient in Urimax is tamsulosin. Tamsulosin eases urination by relaxing the muscles of the neck of the bladder and prostate.
Your doctor may prescribe Urimax for other medical conditions not listed here.

Warnings and Precautions

While taking Urimax it is important to follow your doctor's instructions. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage without the advice of your doctor.

Do not take Urimax if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
Do not break, chew or crush Urimax capsules. Capsules should be swallowed whole once a day 30 minutes after eating a meal. For best results take this medication at the same time each day.

If you forget to take a dose of Urimax, take it as soon as you remember but wait 30 minutes if you have just eaten. If it is almost time for the next dose wait and skip the missed dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed one. If you miss does for several days, contact your doctor before taking Urimax.

In case of an accidental overdose, get immediate medical attention.
Do not take Urimax if you are already taking alfuzosin, doxazosin, prazosin, silodosin, or terazosin or other medications for enlarged prostate.

Urimax should not be taken or handled by women, children, or adolescents. It is possible for this medication to be absorbed through the skin.
There may be an increased possibility of developing prostate cancer while taking tamsulosin. Your doctor will test you for prostate cancer before and while you are taking Urimax.

Known to affect the pupils during surgery for cataracts, it is extremely important to tell your eye surgeon that you are taking Urimax well in advance of the surgery.
Do not take Urimax without first telling your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Acute kidney disease
  • High blood pressure
  • History of prostate cancer
  • Liver disease
  • Low blood pressure
  • Prostate cancer

Tamsulosin can cause blood pressure to drop suddenly which can cause dizziness or fainting. This is especially true when first taking the medication. Do not drive, operate machinery or participate in activities that require being alert until you know how Urimax effects you. Contact your doctor if you have persistent dizziness or feeling faint.

Due to the possibility of getting dizzy while taking Tamsulosin you should take care if you must stand for an extended period of time.
Get up slowly if you are sitting or lying down to avoid dizziness or falling.

Do not exert more than usual during exercise to prevent feeling dizzy.
Blood pressure may drop while taking Urimax due to factors such as:

  • Diarrhea
  • Diet low in sodium
  • Diuretics
  • Heart disease
  • Profuse sweating
  • Vomiting

Tell your doctor if you experience extreme tiredness following an illness that has caused diarrhea or vomiting
Urimax should be stored in a cool dry location, away from heat, light, or moisture. Do not take Urimax capsules if they are damaged. Damage is characterized by changes in color or shape of the capsule.

Store Urimax in a cool dry location; keep out of the reach of children and pets.

Drug Interactions

Before taking any medication it is important to tell your doctor what medications you take. This includes all prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal remedies. This is important to prevent a possible drug interaction.

Do not take Urimax with the following medications unless instructed to do so by your doctor:

  • Cimetidine
  • Conivaptan
  • Imatinib
  • Isoniazid
  • Methimazole
  • Pioglitazone
  • Ropinirole
  • Ticlopidine
  • Warfarin

Some antibiotic drugs such as:

  • Clarithromycin
  • Dalfopristin/quinupristin
  • Erythromycin
  • Telithromycin

Antidepressant medications such as:

  • Citalopram
  • Clomipramine
  • Desipramine

Antifungals such as:

  • Clotrimazole
  • Itraconazole
  • Ketoconazole

Anti malaria drugs such as:

  • Chloroquine
  • Pyrimethamine

Erectile dysfunction medicine such as:

  • Sildenafil
  • Tadalafil

Heart or blood pressure medication such as:

  • Diltiazem
  • Nicardipine
  • Verapamil

How to use

Urimax should be taken as directed by your doctor. Follow the prescription label for exact dosing instructions. Read the patient instruction leaflet that is packaged with your prescription. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions.

Possible Side Effects

There is the potential for side effects with most medications. If you experience any unusual symptom or an allergic reaction to tamsulosin get immediate medical attention.
Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include:

  • An erection that lasts longer than four hours
  • Body aches
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Chills
  • Feeling faint
  • Fever
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Severe dizziness
  • Severe Dizziness or fainting

Common side effects which will usually subside include:
Abnormal ejaculation

  • Back pain
  • Changes in vision
  • Cough
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
  • Feeling weak
  • Headache
  • Impotence
  • Insomnia
  • Mild dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Unusual dental problems
